Vol. 27 No. 5

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - TARIFF COMMISSION AND COACH BUILDING.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is now in a position to state whether the consideration by the Tariff Commission of the application made by the National Union of Vehicle Builders for a tariff on coach and motor bodies has yet concluded; if any recommendation has been made on the subject; and, if so, what steps he proposes to take in the matter.

No report has yet been received from the Tariff Commission on the application by the Irish Coachbuilders' Association and the Vehicle Builders' Trade Unions. I understand that the Commissioners are at present awaiting the return of transcripts of evidence from some of the parties together with additional information promised by them when giving their oral evidence. I understand that the applicants must be given an opportunity of rebutting the evidence of the opponents, and that their factories must be inspected, before the Commissioners can proceed to the formulation of their recommendation. As the conduct of the investigation is entrusted to the Commissioners by the Act under which they function, I do not feel called upon to take any action in the matter.
