Vol. 27 No. 7

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - WIDENING OF INCHICORE ROAD.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he is aware that accidents frequently occur at Grattan Crescent, Inchicore, owing to the increased vehicular traffic; whether proposals for the widening of this road have been submitted to his Department; and, if so, whether he will state what action, if any, it is intended to take in the matter.

The answers to the first parts of the question are in the affirmative. An offer of 50 per cent. of the cost of widening this road was made to the Road Authorities, who have stated that they are unable to proceed with the scheme unless a grant to cover the entire cost is made. This is not possible in view of the commitments on the Road Fund.

Since the 22nd October the Crescent has been used in respect of omnibuses as a one-way route only, and warning notices are being erected at each end of the Crescent. These steps should minimise considerably the risk of accidents.

Mr. DOYLE

Is the Minister aware that since these warnings were issued to make this road a one-way route two very serious accidents took place on one day? Having regard to the fact that prior to the use of this road by omnibuses accidents were continually taking place at this particular corner, will the Minister have the matter further investigated?

I do not know if the Minister is aware of that. I will mention it to him.
