Vol. 28 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Derating and Subsidies.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, in view of the derating proposals recently outlined by the British Government for the protection of British industries and the recent supplementary estimate of one million pounds passed by the British Parliament as a grant in aid of railway freights rebates to assist British industry, he will state if the Tariff Commission or other body has been investigating the effect which these derating proposals and subsidies for British industries are likely to have on (a) industry in the Saorstát, and (b) industries wholly unprotected in the Saorstát; and, if so, whether the report of such investigation will be early placed before the Dáil.

The effect of the derating proposals of the British Government on industry in the Saorstát has been under examination by the departments principally concerned, but it is not proposed to publish a report. Any decisions reached by the Government on the question whether the adoption of similar proposals in the Saorstát is either possible or desirable will be duly announced in the Dáil.
