Vol. 28 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Findings of Gaeltacht Commission.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state what steps have been taken by his Department since the Christmas adjournment to put into operation the findings of the Gaeltacht Commission, what schemes of economic improvement he has undertaken, and what particular areas will be affected by them.

My Department is working in co-operation with the other Departments through the Gaeltacht (Economic Development) Committee in giving effect to the recommendations of the Gaeltacht Commission adopted in the White Paper, and I find that the steps taken since the Christmas adjournment affect sixteen of those recommendations and are too numerous to be dealt with in a single reply.

In the case of the services for which my Department is immediately responsible, steps have been taken (a) in the settlement of a scheme of reorganisation of the rural industrial establishments and the setting up of a central marketing organisation with the view of securing wider markets, standardised production, and more regular employment for a larger number of workers, and (b) in the preparation of new patterns and textures of cloths for the revival of the Donegal tweed industry.
