Vol. 28 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Councillors' Travelling Expenses.

Mr. Boland (for Mr. Holt)

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether his attention has been drawn to the hardship which exists under Section 63 of the Local Government Act, 1925, whereby members of a county council, retiring as a result of the triennial elections, are not eligible to be paid travelling expenses in proportion to the number of meetings attended within the half year, and if it is the intention of the Minister to introduce proposals for legislation to remedy this defect.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. The payments admissible under Section 63 of the Act mentioned are not intended to recoup members fully for out of pocket expenses, and are merely contributions towards such expenses, which were payable previously by county councillors themselves. It is not intended to introduce legislation of the nature indicated.
