Vol. 28 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Co. Mayo Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries whether he will state on what grounds was the objection of the landlord and occupier, Mr. E.C. Walshe, Castlehill, Crossmolina, Co. Mayo, to resumption of lands situate at Castlehill, Co. Mayo, allowed, and what further steps the Land Commission proposes taking in the matter, in view of the very serious congestion existing in that district.

Proceedings were instituted under the provisions of the Land Act, 1923, for the acquisition of the lands of Castlehill and the lands were published in a Provisional List of lands which if not excluded in consequence of a valid objection would become vested in the Land Commission on the appointed day.

The owner lodged an objection to the acquisition of these lands by the Land Commission. His objection was heard in court and judgement given after witnesses had been examined and evidence given.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries whether he will state what steps have been taken to resume the holding of Mr. E.C. McCormick, situate at Summerhill, Killala, Co. Mayo, for distribution among the uneconomic landholders of the district, and whether a holding of equal value has been offered to Mr. McCormick.

The lands of Rathfran, containing approximately 297 acres, the property of Mr. James E. McCormick, Summerhill, Carrowmore, were gazetted for acquisition under the provisions of Section 24 (3) Land Act, 1923. The owner objected to acquisition and after a hearing in court his objection was disallowed by the Land Commissioners and the lands have now been declared to be required for the purpose of relieving congestion.

As these lands have already been purchased under the Land Purchase Acts the owner has exercised his right to be provided with a new holding equally suitable and of not less value.

Negotiations are pending with a view to providing the owner with a suitable exchange.
