Vol. 29 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cahir Incident.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that members of the Fianna Fáil organisation have been subjected to a great deal of persecution in Cahir, Co. Tipperary; that it is stated that one of the officers of the Cumann who was arrested on March 25th by the Detective Division of the Gárda Síochána and detained all day, was threatened while in custody, and questioned as to the number of clubs in that area; that on March 30th two more members were arrested and threatened with shooting if they did not keep clear of the town; and if he will state what steps it is intended to take to prevent a recurrence of such actions.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. As regards the remainder of the question the position is as follows:—On the 24th March, 1929, certain posters appeared in Cahir posted up in public places, the gist of which was that certain jurors who had done their duty in a criminal trial should be assassinated. In the course of the police investigation as to the source of these posters and the persons responsible for having them posted up, suspicion fell on three persons. One of these was detained on the 25th March for a few hours and the other two were detained on the 30th March for about ten minutes. No threats were used.
