Vol. 29 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Sligo Estates.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he can now state whether the Land Commission propose to acquire the ranch lands belonging to Basil Phibbs, in Bearlough, Rathmullen, Co. Sligo, for the purpose of relieving the acute congestion that prevails in the district.

The Land Commission have had the lands at Bearlough and other lands inspected, and are negotiating with the owner with a view to their acquisition.

I presume the Parliamentary Secretary is aware that this is a very congested district, and that, in the past, tenants in the vicinity of this ranch farm obtained conacre tillage there. The owner has refused this year to let his land for tillage purposes. In view of his refusal, will the Parliamentary Secretary expedite the acquisition of this farm for the purpose of distribution amongst the adjoining congested tenants?

The acquisition of this farm has been expedited as much as possible. I understand that the owner was prepared to let this farm for grazing this year, but he could not get any of the adjoining tenants to take advantage of it.

I am informed to the contrary.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he can state whether the Land Commission have acquired, or intend to acquire, the Flanagan Farm on the Gore Booth Estate, in the parish of Keash, Co. Sligo, for the purpose of relieving congestion in that district.

The lands referred to comprise 209 acres, 0 roods, 14 perches of the townland of Carnaweelaun, and are subject to land purchase annuity; they have been offered by the owner for sale to the Land Commission, and the Commissioners have directed that preliminary inquiries be made with a view to determining as to their suitability, etc., for acquisition.
