Vol. 31 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing Scheme for Gaeltacht.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries whether he will state the reasons for the delay in introducing proposals for legislation for dealing with housing and improvement of dwellings in the Gaeltacht, and whether he is prepared to introduce proposals for such legislation during this session.

The needs of the Gaeltacht in the matter of the provision of better houses and in the improvement of existing dwellings differ from those in other parts of the country, and involve, in addition to the provision of exceptional facilities, some effort to enable the poorer families, whose cases are more urgent, to avail of the facilities afforded.

The question has been the subject of careful examination by an expert committee, whose recommendations have only recently been submitted to me. The proposals made have now been approved by the Government, and steps are at present being taken to embody them in Bill form, but I fear that the task cannot be completed in time for me to introduce the Bill this session.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary give any indication as to when these proposals for legislation will be introduced?

At the beginning of the Autumn Session.
