Vol. 31 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drogheda Meat Factory.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he has made inquiries into the failure of the Drogheda Meat Factory, and whether he is prepared to make a statement as to the causes of the failure.

The failure of this undertaking was due mainly to uneconomic buying in the home market, to high oncosts in the factory, and to the inability of the selling organisation in Great Britain to obtain prices for the factory product equivalent to its quality.

Will the Minister state if the Minister for Finance has already been called upon to make good any of the guarantee in connection with the loan to this factory?

Undoubtedly part of the guarantee will have to be made good.

It has not been made good yet?

I would not like to answer that definitely. The factory is in the hands of the receiver at the moment, and I do not know whether the accounts have been presented.
