Vol. 32 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral—Answers. - Acquisition of Galway Estates.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries whether the Land Commission have acquired the lands of Dr. Costello, Tuam, and Thomas O'Brien, Clough, Williamstown, situated at Islands, Williamstown, County Galway (Isabella Hawe Estate); and, if so, whether it is their intention to have those lands divided in the near future.

The Land Commission have not acquired the holdings of Doctor Costello and Thomas O'Brien, situated in the townland of Briersfort, held by them as tenants subject to judicial rents, on the estate of Isabella Hawe, which is pending for sale under the Land Act, 1923. When the estate is being dealt with the question of the retention and resumption of the holdings will be considered.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries whether the Land Commission have yet acquired any lands on the Synge Estate, Gortnagraune, Dunmore, County Galway; and, if so, whether he will state what progress has been made as regards the division of same.

The Land Commission have not yet acquired any lands on the Synge Estate at Gortagarraub, but they have been in negotiation with Mr. Charles Flattery, who is a tenant of 314 acres, 2 roods, 26 perches of the adjoining lands of Brackloon on the Synge Estate, with a view to the acquisition of his holding in exchange for lands elsewhere, but so far it has not been found possible to effect the exchange. This holding will be retained by the Land Commission when they are dealing with this estate in due course under the purchase provisions of the Land Act, 1923.
