Vol. 32 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Claims of Connaught Rangers.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he has decided to re-open for investigation any or all of the claims of the Connaught Rangers who mutinied in India in 1920, with a view to granting pension or gratuity to those members who have, and are still, suffering severe hardships since their discharge from the British Army.

As the Deputy is no doubt aware, the claims put forward on behalf of certain ex-members of the Connaught Rangers were very carefully considered by a Committee which was specially appointed for the purpose. The Committee reported that no claim for compensation arising out of the mutiny was sustainable. I have reviewed the position on several occasions since the Committee reported, but no facts which were not available to the Committee have been brought to my notice. In the circumstances, while I would be ready to examine any new considerations, there would appear at present to be no advantage in re-opening the case.
