Vol. 33 No. 1

Public Business. - Road Traffic Bill, 1929.

I asked permission for the introduction of this Bill before the Recess. I have not been able to lay the Bill before the House up to now, and I will ask the House to discharge the Order.

Would the Minister state when it is proposed to introduce the Bill?

I am not in a position to say when; I doubt if it will be possible to introduce the measure before Easter. As soon as I can make a statement on the matter I will let the House know.

Is the Minister referring to the Traffic Bill as far as Dublin is concerned, or to the Saorstát as a whole?

I am referring to the General Regulation of Traffic Bill, and not the Dublin one only.

Is the Minister aware that this Bill was promised to be circulated before Christmas?

I presume when the Minister asked leave to introduce the Bill he had it ready for printing. What has happened in the meantime?

The Deputy misunderstands the position. I asked leave to circulate the measure because the House was rising for a comparatively lengthy period. I had hoped in the meantime the outstanding questions of policy that required to be settled would have been settled and the further drafting that was required to be done in the Bill would have been completed, but it has not been possible to do that.

Order for Second Reading discharged.
