Vol. 33 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Alleged Seizure of Lobster Pots.

Seán Ua Guilidhe

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he is aware of the fact that a French trawler raided the lobster fisheries off the Waterford coast on or about the 25th February, 1930, and seized a large number of pots, the property of local fishermen, and if steps will be taken to prosecute the raider.

I have had exhaustive inquiry made as to recent reports in the Press containing the allegations referred to in the question, and I find that the reports are without foundation.

Is the Minister aware that there was more damage done than the taking of a few lobster pots in Dunmore on Thursday last? Foreign boats were in Dunmore harbour during the past winter. They made it the base of their operations. During the daytime they remained in the harbour and at night slipped out to fish within the limits. My information is that if their operations are not stopped the lobster fishing will be destroyed.

The Deputy is entering into the question of illegal fishing by the French lobster boats. The question asked was: had a French trawler raided the lobster fisheries and seized a number of pots? The Deputy has now raised a different matter.

Is it the intention of the Department to provide an additional protection vessel? Surely the Minister will admit that one vessel is inadequate for protection?

That is another matter.

Will the Minister look into the matter mentioned by Deputy Goulding?

I am looking into the matter. The fishery cruiser is in the neighbourhood.

These men when caught are not properly dealt with. Recently one of these men was fined only 30/-, and his gear returned. Surely that is not sufficient.

That is a matter for the District Justice.
