Vol. 36 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Inniskee Islanders' Migration.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state whether the scheme for the migration of Inniskee Islanders, which was prepared in connection with the settlement of the lands of Patrick J. O'Reilly, in the townlands of Surgeview and Letterbeg, has been approved by the Land Commission; and, if so, what action has been taken to put the scheme into operation.

A provisional scheme for the division of the lands of Surgeview or Nakil and Letterbeg, on the O'Reilly Estate, is at present under consideration, but it is not possible at present to say when it can be completed and put into operation. The matter is being dealt with as expeditiously as possible.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary state whether the scheme which was prepared in November, 1929, is the scheme which is now being considered or whether a new scheme is under consideration?

Then it is the same scheme?

Then may we take it that it is the scheme of 1929 which is still being considered?

On the last occasion when this matter was raised I told the Deputy that a scheme was being prepared by the inspector. It is one of the most difficult schemes which the Department has had to prepare for a number of years, as it involves the transfer of some fifty families from the island to the mainland. There are some big questions of policy involved as well. All these matters are under consideration at present and, until they are disposed of, it will be impossible to make further progress.
