Vol. 36 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork School Attendance Committee.

asked the Minister for Education whether he is aware that the School Attendance Committee at present functioning in Cork City under Section 10 of the School Attendance Act, 1926, is the Committee that was appointed 10 years ago; whether he is also aware that the membership of this Committee has now dwindled down to five; whether he is further aware that, were it not that the Chief Attendance Officer visits members personally to request their attendance at meetings, there would hardly ever be a quorum present to do business; and whether in these circumstances he intends to use the power vested in him by the 1926 Act to appoint a new Committee.

The last School Attendance Committee for the school attendance area of the County Borough of Cork entered on office on the 1st May, 1922.

According to Section 10, sub-section 2, of the Act of 1926, this Committee continued as the first School Attendance Committee under that Act.

I am aware that the Committee had become depleted but there was no legal provision for filling casual vacancies in that Committee.

A new Committee has now been appointed under the terms of the Order (No. 69—Statutory Rules and Orders, 1930) and will commence its term of office on the 1st proximo.
