Vol. 36 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Donegal Distress.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that at the last meeting of the Donegal County Council a resolution was unanimously adopted in which was pointed out the poverty existing amongst the unemployed, the landless men, the uneconomic holders and the fishermen in that county, and whether he will state the amount which it is proposed to expend in County Donegal out of the £300,000 which has been voted by the Dáil for relief schemes.

I have not seen a copy of the resolution to which the Deputy refers. With regard to the second part of the question, the claims of County Donegal will be considered by the Departments concerned in conjunction with claims put forward by other areas, but it is not proposed at this stage to allocate on a county basis the full amount voted by the Dáil for the relief of unemployment and distress.

Is the Minister prepared to give me an estimate of the amount which his Department is prepared to sanction for expenditure in the county?

Will the Minister give an assurance to Deputies representing other poverty-stricken areas that all the relief money will not be allocated to poor Donegal?

They could do with it all there.
