Vol. 36 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Blakeney (Cahir) Estate.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries what steps, if any, he has taken to acquire the lands of Loughloher, Cahir, Co. Tipperary, known as the Blakeney Estate, which consists of about 500 statute acres; if he will state whether he proposes to take over these lands for division amongst the uneconomic holders and landless men of the district, and, if so, when.

The Land Commission do not propose to take any action at present regarding the acquisition of the lands referred to by the Deputy.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that these lands have been let to another man for a period of four or five years and has he not received a memorial from that district as to the congestion existing there?

Would the Parliamentary Secretary give us some information as to why the Land Commission have refused to take over these lands?

I have received a memorial from a number of small holders living in the neighbourhood of these lands, but perhaps the Deputy is not aware that the lands are subject to a land annuity and the owner could claim an alternative holding. We are not in a position at present to offer an alternative holding.

2/6 an acre is the only annuity she is paying to the Land Commission.

The land is subject to a land annuity.

No. The Deputy is under a misapprehension. The owner was paying a head rent on these lands, but that head rent was redeemed years ago.
