Vol. 37 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dáil Eireann Internal Loan (Sligo Subscribers).

asked the Minister for Finance whether he has received a complete list of subscribers to the Dáil Eireann Loan (Internal), 1919-20, for the Cloonacool district, in the old Parliamentary Constituency of South Sligo, which list has been certified as correct by the original collectors; and, if so, whether he will state the reason repayment has not been made, and if it is intended to accept this list as correct.

A list of subscribers to the Dáil Eireann (Internal) Loan, 1919/20, for the Cloonacool district has been received in my Department.

The list, however, does not appear to be complete, and there are a number of discrepancies between the particulars contained therein and those given in individual applications for repayment which have been made to my Department. Further, it has not been found possible to establish that the sums collected in this district were duly forwarded to the Dáil Eireann Department of Finance.

My Department is pursuing inquiries with a view to clearing up the position.

Could the Minister indicate what steps he has taken in this particular district to ascertain who were the subscribers to the Loan?

I could not say what exact steps were taken.

Could the Minister give any indication as to how much of the Loan has been refunded?

That is a separate question.

Could the Minister state if he has taken any steps to ascertain the names of the subscribers in this district?

Steps are being taken, but I could not give the Deputy details of them.

I have here a letter which I have received from the Department of Finance, dated 21st November, 1930, in which it is stated that they were communicating with the person who furnished what purported to be a complete list of subscribers, but I ascertained a week ago from this person that he was never written to, although I have here a letter from the Department stating that a letter was being sent to him.

I gather that there are letters about to issue to Mr. Mullarkey and Dr. O'Harte.

It is over three months ago since this letter was to be sent to Mr. Mullarkey. Am I to take it that it will be sent to him now?

I think so.

Will the Minister consider introducing legislation putting the subscribers to the Dáil Eireann Loan on the same basis as the landlords are being put in the new Land Bill? Under the Land Bill no matter how many people have paid for the land, if the owner comes along eventually he will get the money. We would like to know whether the subscribers to this Loan will get the money.

They will get the money all right.
