Vol. 37 No. 8

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kelp Industry in Donegal.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state the number of tons of kelp produced in the Fanad Peninsula, County Donegal, in the years 1926 to 1930; the names of the principal buyers of kelp in that area during those years, and the average price per ton paid each year.

I have no reliable information on the subject prior to 1930 but the quantity of kelp produced during the earlier years mentioned appears to have ranged from 260 to 360 tons and the average price to have been about £5 10s. 0d. per ton. The kelp appears to have been purchased principally by Messrs. Fairlie and Co. The quantity of kelp produced last season was 510 tons and the average price was about £7 10s. 0d. The kelp was purchased by the Galway Factory and Messrs. Fairlie and Co.
