Vol. 37 No. 11

In Committee on Finance. - Vote 59.—Marine Service.

I move:—

Go ndeontar suim Bhreise ná raghaidh thar £1,000 chun íoctha an Mhuirir a thiocfaidh chun bheith iníoctha i rith na bliana dar críoch an 31adh lá de Mhárta, 1931, chun Tuarastail agus Costaisí na Muir-Sheirbhíse (Merchant Shipping Acts, 1894-1921, Crown Lands Acts, 1829-1866)

That a Supplementary sum not exceeding £1,000 be granted to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending 31st March, 1931, for the Salaries and Expenses of the Marine Service (Merchant Shipping Acts, 1894-1921, Crown Lands Acts, 1829-1866).

The supplementary sum is required because the Appropriations in Aid will fall short of our expectations by this amount, and the reason why the Appropriations in Aid did not amount to the whole estimate is owing to the considerable decrease in the number of emigrants setting out to the United States. The number of trans-Atlantic liners which used to call at Cobh and Galway has decreased so that there is not the same amount of money to be garnered for survey inspection of ships, or medical inspection of crews, passengers and stores as was estimated. That is one item. The second is the amount of money that was supposed to accrue from the sale of wreekage and which is not the same as the sum that was estimated.

Question put and agreed to.
Votes ordered to be reported.
