Vol. 37 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Congestion in County Tipperary.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state the total acreage of the Scully Estate, Mantlehill, Golden, Co. Tipperary, held by Mr. T. P. Kennedy; when it is intended to have it taken over for the relief of the acute congestion which exists in Golden village; and also, if he will state what was the report of the Land Commission inspector who visited this estate.

The total area of lands in the occupation of Mr. Thomas Patrick Kennedy on the Scully Estate, County Tipperary, in the townlands of Mantlehill Great, Mantlehill Little and Baurstookeen is 858 acres. These lands were vested in the Land Commission on the Appointed Day and proceedings for resumption of the whole holding were initiated, but having regard to the amount that would have to be paid for the tenant's interest the Land Commission decided not to proceed with the resumption of the holding. The question of resuming a portion of the holding is at present under consideration and the inspector's report in the matter is expected shortly.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state what steps have been taken to acquire the lands of the Armitage Estate, Ballinure, Killenaule, Co. Tipperary, for division amongst the unemployed workers, landless men, and uneconomic holders of the district; and whether it is intended to use, if necessary, the compulsory powers of the Land Commission in this case.

The Land Commission have had the lands on the Armitage Estate inspected, but having considered all the circumstances of the case decided to take no action for their acquisition.

What is the acreage of this place? Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that most of this land has gone waste and in the vicinity of this land there are from 20 to 30 families living in a congested area?

The area is 600 acres. The owner, I understand, gives a great deal of employment, and if the Land Commission acquires the land practically the whole of it would have to be utilised to make provision for the employees on the estate.
