Vol. 37 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing and Road Conditions in Achill.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he is aware that the townland of Dooniver, Sligo Estate, Achill, was purchased 19 years ago by the Congested Districts Board; and, if so, whether he will state why the necessary improvements in housing accommodation on this estate have not been carried out; or is he aware of the poor housing conditions under which those tenants exist; and will he state if there is any likelihood of the conditions referred to being remedied in the near future; and further, whether he will state why the necessary accommodation in roads leading to the turbary of the tenants in question is not completed.

The estate of the Marquess of Sligo was purchased by the late Congested Districts Board in the year 1920.

The Land Commission are aware of the condition of the tenants in the Dooniver townland situated on this estate and a scheme providing for the rearrangement of their holdings and the improvement of their houses is nearing completion and the question of road accommodation to turbary is being considered in conjunction therewith.

The Parliamentary Secretary stated that this purchase was made in 1920. I am at a loss to understand why the tenants told me that the land was purchased for the last 19 years. I would like to ask the Parliamentary Secretary what is the reason for the difference in the statement which the tenants are in a position to make, and which I am sure is not a false statement, and the statement he has just made.
