Vol. 38 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Division of O'Kelly Estate, Roscommon.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state when it is proposed to divide the O'Kelly Estate, Castlesampson, Taughmaconnell, Co. Roscommon.

A Scheme for the division of the lands of Castlesampson (O'Kelly Estate) has been prepared and is at present under consideration. The Land Commission anticipate that they will be in a position to put it into operation next season.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state when it is proposed to complete the draining and making of the necessary roads on the Higgins Bog, Boherbee, Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

A considerable area of the Higgins Bog has been already allotted and roads and drains made. The remainder is in process of allotment and when the division is completed the making of the necessary roads and drains will be considered.

Mr. Boland

Does the Parliamentary Secretary think it is fair that poor people should be asked to pay rents for these bogs when the necessary roads and drains have not been made? I think that before they should be asked to pay rents something should be done to make the bogs available to them.

Some of these tenants are not paying rent to the Land Commission yet.

Mr. Boland

I understand the position is that some of these people signed and others have not, and that until everyone has signed the Land Commission will not make the roads and drains. Those who signed come immediately under rent. They should not be asked to pay when they cannot make use of the bogs.

I am afraid the Deputy is confusing this bog with a bog he asked a question about a month ago.

Mr. Boland

I am complaining of the general practice.
