Vol. 38 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tullamore Barrack Site.

asked the Minister for Finance if he has received any report regarding the dangerous and insanitary condition of portion of the old barrack site at Tullamore, County Offaly; if he will issue immediate instructions to remove the dangerous walls and have the site cleared; if he is aware that the Tullamore Urban District Council have already erected 27 houses on this site, and if he will agree to hand over the remaining portion of this site to the Urban Council at a nominal rent in order to enable them to complete their scheme for the erection of working class houses in this portion of the town.

A complaint was received by the Commissioners of Public Works from the solicitor to the Tullamore Urban Council and from the County Medical Officer of Health also regarding the alleged dangerous and insanitary condition of the ex-Royal Irish Constabulary barrack site in Tullamore. The necessary steps are being taken to remedy any dangerous conditions that may exist.

I am aware that the Tullamore Urban District Council have erected twenty-seven houses on portion of the barrack site, but no decision can yet be given as to the ultimate use that will be made of the remaining portion.

If the site can be used for the completion of a housing scheme which the Urban Council had in mind, why leave the site derelict, as it has been left for the past four or six years?

Mr. Bourke

It is possible that the site will be required for a Gárda Síochána barracks, but we have to wait for a final decision on that matter.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary indicate when a decision will be taken, and can he state whether the whole of the remaining portion of the site will be required for the barracks?

Mr. Bourke

I cannot answer those questions.
