Vol. 38 No. 19

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Compilation of Customs Entries by L.M.S. Co.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that the London, Midland and Scottish Railway Co. propose to compile their entries for Free State Customs at Holyhead instead of Dublin; and, if so, what action he proposes to take.

Since the establishment of a separate Customs régime between this country and Great Britain, the company mentioned have prepared, at Holyhead, the Customs entries for goods not liable to duty in this country imported by their steamers. The entries for dutiable goods to be delivered out of Customs control on arrival have been prepared at the place of importation in this country. This practice still obtains. There is no power under existing law to compel the company to prepare all entries at the Saorstát place of importation, and I am of opinion that it would not be in the interests of the importers to seek powers to so compel the company.
