Vol. 40 No. 16

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Lands at Castlerea.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries whether it is proposed to acquire the lands of Killer, Fohena and Carraun, in the parish of Ballintubber, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon, on the Glover Estate, for the purpose of relieving congestion in the district.

The owner in this case objected to the acquisition of the lands of Killer, Fonaghmore and Carraun and his objection was allowed by the Judicial Commissioner. The Land Commission have decided to appeal in the matter to the Supreme Court, and until a decision has been given on the appeal it is not possible to say whether these lands will be acquired by the Land Commission.

Do I understand the Parliamentary Secretary to say that the objection has been upheld in one case—I did not quite catch what he said?

Yes, by the Judicial Commissioner; the case has been appealed to the Supreme Court.

I would like to remind the Parliamentary Secretary that great discontent has been felt locally at this man being allowed to hold so much land there. Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that there has been great discontent in the district over this case? If the Land Commission fail in one part of Roscommon they should not hesitate to take it off him in another area.

No progress can be made until the appeal is decided.
