Vol. 40 No. 21

Vacancies in the Dáil.

I would like to ask the President what are his intentions with regard to moving the writs for the by-elections in Leix-Offaly and Carlow-Kilkenny?

I have not yet made up my mind on the subject.

I think it is about time the President made up his mind about these two elections.

That is a matter for me.

The Deputies are dead a good while now, and I remember that the Government forced us on a previous occasion to move a writ within ten days after the death of a Deputy. It is now two months since the vacancies occurred, and I think the country is entitled to get an opportunity of saying what it thinks of the Government's policy. The country wants the opportunity very badly and the President knows perfectly well what he will be told. Will the President say when he will make up his mind to move for these writs?

When I find it convenient to do so.
