Vol. 40 No. 24

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Uneconomic Holders (Co. Mayo).

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state what steps are being taken by the Irish Land Commission to relieve the acute congestion that exists in the Seefin, Scardane and Ballyglass (The Monument) district in Co. Mayo; will he state if the Land Commission have inspected all the grazing ranches in the above area with a view to acquiring them for distribution amongst the uneconomic holders in the district; will he state also what immediate steps the Land Commission are taking to meet the very urgent requirements in the way of providing the many very small landholders in the area with economic holdings; and, if such steps are being taken by the Irish Land Commission, whether the land will be available during the coming spring.

The Land Commission have already acquired and distributed a large area of untenanted land in the localities mentioned by the Deputy. They have at present under consideration the question of the acquisition of portion of the lands of Kilscohagh and Cortantarin, which are in the vicinity of the lands of Scardane and Ballyglass, but it is not possible to state at the moment if and when these lands will be acquired and distributed.
