Vol. 46 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Upperchurch (Tipperary) Funeral.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is yet in a position to state whether at a funeral at Upperchurch, County Tipperary, on the 19th February three volleys were discharged over the grave, and, if so, whether he will state by whom these volleys were fired. the number and make of the weapons used, and whether these weapons were lawfully in the possession of the parties who discharged them, and whether they were lawfully used on the occasion.

The only information which the police have been able to obtain in this matter is to the effect that at a funeral at Upperchurch, County Tipperary, on the 18th February last three volleys were fired over the grave. The police have no evidence to show by whom the shots were discharged. Their information is that a party of six men remained outside the wall of the cemetery in an adjoining field until the time arrived for them to take up their position at the graveside. They then crossed the wall, bringing their rifles with them, discharged three volleys, and disappeared. Notwithstanding diligent inquiry, no definite information can be obtained as to the identity of the persons who discharged the shots.

It is not possibled to state the make of the rifles used or where they came from and it is not considered likely that any more definite information in this matter will be obtained.
