Vol. 47 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - President's Declaration of Policy.

asked the President whether in view of his declaration of policy on April 23rd at Arbour Hill he will inform the Dáil what forms and symbols now existing in or arising out of the Constitution are regarded by the Executive Council as inconsistent with Ireland's right as a sovereign nation and whether early steps will be taken with a view to their removal.

The statement mentioned by the Deputy had reference to all those provisions of the Constitution which, in accordance with the British interpretation of the Treaty of December 6th, 1921, were imposed on the Provisional Parliament sitting as a Constituent Assembly and have never been freely accepted by the Irish people. Many of them are inconsistent with the present status of the Irish Free State. One is being removed to-day, and legislation will be introduced in the near future to remove others. The remainder will be removed according as opportunity presents itself.

Would the President be so kind as to specify at least some of the others?

The Oath is a sufficient example.

I do not find the answer satisfactory and I wish to give notice that I shall raise the matter on the adjournment.
