Vol. 47 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Kelp.

Mr. Lynch

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries whether it is a fact that this year it is proposed to pay only £4 or £4 10s. a ton for kelp as against an average of £7 or £8 per ton last year and the year before, and, if so, what is the cause of this very big fall in the price proposed to be paid this year.

The prices to be paid for kelp this season have not yet been determined. Owing, however, to a reduction of 50 per cent. in the world price of iodine, by which the value of kelp is regulated, they cannot be as high as those previously paid.
