Vol. 48 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rates of Wages on Minor Relief Works.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the rates of wages paid to foremen and gangers employed on minor relief works and the subsistence allowance or expenses, if any, also the rate per day paid to carters for carting material in connection with the carrying out of such works.

Under the county surveyors and their assistants the supervision of minor relief works is carried out by (a) gangers and (b) charge hands.

The pay of gangers varies from 8/- to 10/- per day according to their degree of competence and to the district in which they are employed.

The wages paid to charge hands vary from 5/6 to 6/6 per day in similar circumstances.

No subsistence allowances or expenses are paid either to gangers or charge hands.

The rate payable to carters varies from 7/- to 8/- per day according to the district.

What is the explanation for the variation in the rates of pay? Is it according to distance or tonnage or what?

I think I made it clear. The rate per day in the case of gangers varies according to their degree of competence and to the district in which they are employed. The rate payable to carters varies according to the district.

Does the rate mentioned for carters include the hire of the transport provided by the carters?

I presume so.

If he had not a horse and cart would he get anything in addition for hiring?

I presume he should.
