Vol. 48 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Analysis of Unemployed.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the results of his analysis of the persons registered as unemployed on the 16th January, 1933.

The analysis which was made of the number of persons registered as unemployed on the 16th January, 1933, was undertaken for the purpose of assisting the Departments concerned in the administration of unemployment relief, and I do not intend to publish the figures.

Is the Minister aware that, on the 27th April the Minister expressly stated that the result of this analysis was of definite interest, and added that he would endeavour to make it available?

I am not aware that the Minister made such a statement.

It is a fact. Will the Minister, in the circumstances, undertake to review the matter, and see why exactly the Minister of that day told the House that this analysis was of definite interest, and why now in the circumstances he has changed his mind?

Will the Minister say what possible objection there can be to publishing these matters?

The Minister considers it is not advisable in all the circumstances.

Would the Minister say if there is any connection between the non-publication and the change in the Department's policy, mentioned by the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Finance, when he disclosed the fact that it is not binding on persons engaged in Government work to be employed through the Labour Exchange; in other words, suggesting that they may be employed through Fianna Fáil clubs!
