Vol. 49 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Surgical Boots.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will exempt from the ordinary import duties specially made surgical boots seeing that such boots are not being made in the Saorstát, and that they are particularly expensive owing to the fact of their having to be made specially for each individual case.

Dr. Ryan

I am not prepared to recommend the exemption of surgical boots from duty. Surgical boots of all kinds can be made in the Saorstát and there is no difficulty in having orders executed at reasonable prices.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, I presume that if it could be shown that these specially made surgical boots could not be manufactured here, he would be prepared to give free import under licence.

Dr. Ryan

I have information from some of the hospitals here in the city and they appear to be quite satisfied with the boots.

If I give the particulars to the Minister, perhaps he will consider it on that basis?

Dr. Ryan

I think the Minister would be glad to get the particulars because it would appear that these boots can be got in the country.
