Vol. 49 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - House-Reconstruction in Cavan.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware that there is a great deal of unemployment in County Cavan, and that this is in part due to the fact that many works of reconstruction under the Housing (Financial and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1932, were delayed because of the failure of the Department's inspector to call and start them; and if he will state when he hopes that this state of things will be remedied; and, also, if he is aware that there are some who could not afford to delay such works of reconstruction until the winter came upon them, and proceeded with the work on the advice of the Housing Department and the promise from them that the inspector would soon call, which he has not done, and if the Minister will guarantee that such people shall not suffer any loss in consequence of such defection or failure on the part of the Housing Department.

Investigation of cases for which applications for grants for the reconstruction of houses in County Cavan have been received is being made as rapidly as possible. 385 applications have been received. Inspections have taken place in 255 cases and 168 grants have already been allotted in respect of these cases. The inspector is at present in the district and will remain until all applications have been investigated.
