Vol. 50 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Alleged Attack at Ballineen.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he is aware that it is alleged that a party of about 100 men armed with sticks, stones and bottles attacked a small party of supporters of the United Ireland Party at Ballineen station on the night of October 1st on their return from the Cork meeting; that it is further alleged that the Gárda Síochána were aware of the contemplated attack but took no steps to get reinforcements, even when requested to do so by the local parish priest on his arrival on the scene; that only for the intervention of the parish priest serious casualties might have eventuated; and if action has been or will be taken to inquire fully into the matter so as to prevent a recurrence.

Criminal proceedings are pending in this matter, and in these circumstances I think it undesirable to make any statement in this House on the subject.

In face of the Minister's reply I cannot, I suppose, put any supplementary questions to him. Of course, he is aware that more serious happenings have occurred in this district since and will have to be inquired into next week.
