Vol. 50 No. 4

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bounty on Exported Turkeys.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that the imposition of an import duty of 5d. per lb. on turkeys entering the British market will, during the forthcoming Christmas season, inflict serious loss on rural labourers' wives and the wives of small farmers, who are the principal breeders and feeders of these birds in this country, and whether in the circumstances he is prepared to consider the question of increasing the present bounty to, say, 4d. per lb.

Dr. Ryan

I have given this matter full consideration, and am not prepared, having regard to the funds available for the payment of bounties on the exports of various agricultural products, to recommend an increase in the existing rate of bounty on exports of turkeys.
