Vol. 50 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Coal for Government Offices.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state whether any coal is being used in Government offices in Dublin at present; and, if so, whether he will state the country of origin, the class, and the price of the coal so used, and the average weekly consumption.

Coal is being used in Government offices in Dublin at present. The bituminous coal in use is of Silesian origin; the anthracite coal is native coal from Castlecomer. The average present weekly consumption of bituminous coal both house and steam, in offices and other Government institutions excluding Military Baracks is 175 tons; and of anthracite 88 tons. It is not the practice to disclose information as to contractors' prices.

Is the Minister aware that local bodies are able to get a supply of good class coal at 30/- or 29/9 per ton? Will the Minister look into the question of why 38/4 should be paid for a supply of turf while coal of good quality can be got at 29/9?

The House has no information that 38/- has been paid for coal anywhere.

38/4 for turf and 29/9 for coal.

If the Minister goes into the question of the price of turf would he take into consideration the advertisement for English coal that has taken place here to-day by Deputy Mulcahy?

Might I ask the Deputy to say when anything was said about English coal?
