Vol. 50 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dunmanway Incident.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that on Christmas morning last Cornelius Daly of Gloun, Dunmanway, a well-known supporter of Fine Gael, was assaulted in the streets of Dunmanway while returning from Midnight Mass; that as a result of the injuries which he received he died on January 4th, and whether any persons have yet been brought to justice for this outrage.

The facts in this case were reported to me as they appear in the question. No person has been brought to justice in connection with the matter.

The police are still pursuing inquiries.

Mr. Burke

Arising out of the Minister's reply, is he aware that the names of some of the assailants have been given to the Civic Guards in Dunmanway?

Any information that has been given to the Civic Guards has been followed up.

Mr. Burke

Owing to the unsatisfactory nature of the Minister's reply. I beg to give notice that I intend to raise this and kindred matters on the Motion for the Adjournment.

Mr. Burke

I would like to raise kindred matters; perhaps the phrase "matters pertaining thereto" would be more appropriate.

I would like to ask the Chair if two terrible murders should form the subject-matter of amusement in this House?

We have laughter from the people who are responsible for the government of this country.

It shows their sympathy.

May I ask the Minister if he sees any evidence in this case and in other cases of a general conspiracy to bludgeon the political opponents of the present Ministry?

That is a separate question.

May I ask the Minister if it is a fact that the Superintendent of that area has taken up residence in the town of Dunmanway since the death of Con Daly, and has done so at added cost to the State? I would like to know if he has submitted names to the Minister's Department. Is the Minister aware that it is well known to the public who the attackers of Con Daly are? In the circumstances, why has not the Minister taken action? Is he going to allow further murders to be perpetrated?
