Vol. 50 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Protection of Citizens.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that on the occasions of the attempts on the life of a young man named John Murray at Dillon's Cross, Cork, on the nights of the 21st and 26th or 27th January last a number of uniformed Gárdaí and plain clothes policemen were engaged in searching and raiding the houses of other citizens in Cork; and if he will state if a sufficient number of Gárdaí will be released from this kind of duty to afford the necessary protection to the lives and property of all law-abiding citizens of the State.

No searches except those arising out of the outrage itself were made in Cork City on the 21st, 26th or 27th January. The Deputy may take it that every effort is being made and will continue to be made by the police to affort adequate protection to the lives and property of all citizens.

Is the Minister aware that although there was protection afforded to this man, his house was fired into at the time the protection was so afforded?

I am aware that protection was existing at the time and the parties who were alleged to be responsible were apprehended.

Is the Minister aware of the fact that, notwithstanding the protection that was afforded, the house was fired into?

I am aware of that.
