Vol. 51 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Withdrawal of National Teachers' Salaries consequent on decreased averages.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the number of teachers from whom salary has been withdrawn during the three year period ended on December 31st, 1933, because of decrease in the average attendance of pupils at the schools in which they were employed, and if he can state what provision is made by the Department for the re-employment of such teachers in other schools.

The number of teachers from whom salary was withdrawn, owing to insufficiency of average attendance, during the three year period ended on the 31st December, 1933, was 90. Of these, 52 were re-appointed as teachers in national schools and are still serving; one, who obtained re-appointment, has resigned.

My Department is not in a position to make provision for the re-employment of such teachers in other schools. The appointments of teachers in primary schools under the Department, except model schools, rest with the managers subject to the provisions of the regulations.

asked the Minister for Education whether he has now considered the several alternative suggestions placed before him by the Executive of the National Teachers' Organisation on February 11th, 1933, with a view to lessening the number of teachers whose positions may be lost or jeopardised by a decreasing attendance, and whether it is his intention to inform the Teachers' Executive of his decision with regard to these suggestions.

The suggestions referred to were discussed with a deputation from the Executive of the Irish National Teachers' Organisation on the occasion mentioned by the Deputy and have been considered.

I am arranging to have a reply, covering the issues raised, sent to the organisation.

Can the Minister give any information as to when the reply is likely to be received?

I am answering for the Minister for Education, and am not in a position to say.
