Vol. 52 No. 12

In Committee on Finance. - Financial Resolution No. 6—Customs.

I move: "That the Dáil agree with the Committee in Resolution No. 6." This is a similar Resolution and it effects a few changes which are designed to simplify the duties on wearing apparel. There are 220 duties on wearing apparel, but as a result of this Resolution the number will be reduced to 16.

I move amendment No. 1:—

In the Schedule, Part III, page 20, reference No. 27, to delete the figure "5/-" in the third column, and substitute the figure "3/-".

This amendment was put down owing to representations made by people who are affected by the minimum rate. I ask the Minister sympathetically to consider the matter.

Mr. Murphy

I desire to support the amendment. I am very glad to see it brought forward. The case for the amendment has been made on more than one occasion and is within the knowledge of the Minister. I hope he will consider it sympathetically.

Perhaps the Minister will welcome a little unanimity in this matter. He has frequently thrown out the suggestion that there are some things upon which we might be unanimous. This is one of them. Deputy Murphy had occasion to take the matter up with the Minister, and it has been discussed here on two or three occasions, so that I think he might accede to the request made by one of his own supporters and by Deputy Murphy. I hope that it will not be seriously handicapped by my support.

I am not prepared to say anything on the last point, but we are prepared to accept this amendment.

Amendment agreed to.

I move amendment No. 2:—

In the Schedule, Part III, page 20, reference No. 28, to delete the figures "2/6" in the third column, and substitute the figures "1/6".

All these amendments hang together.

Amendment agreed to.

I move amendment No. 3:—

In the Schedule, Part III, page 20, reference No. 29, to delete the figure, "1/-" in the third column, and substitute the figure "6d."

Amendment agreed to.
Resolution, as amended, agreed to.
