Vol. 53 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Discharged from Reserve.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he will state the period of service given (a) in the Army, and (b) in the Army reserve by Patrick Wynne, Dublin, No. 61299; his character in the Army, and the date upon which he would normally be due for discharge from the reserve; and whether he will state if he is aware that Mr. Wynne was discharged from the reserve on the 27th June, although he had been instructed a week previously to make arrangements to come up for training in August; and if he will state the reasons for such discharge.

Patrick Wynne had four years, 141 days Army and five years, 143 days Reserve service. His character in the Army was assessed as "Good." He was normally due for discharge on the 25th October, 1938. He was discharged on the 27th ultimo for the reason that his services were no longer required.

Will the Minister state whether any reason other than his services were no longer required was conveyed to Mr. Wynne when he was discharged?

Will the Minister say whether this is another case of a man being discharged from the Army reserve simply because the Minister objects to his political associations or his political opinions?

His political opinions have nothing whatever to do with it.

Will the Minister say what dictated to him the discharge of this man if it was not for his political opinions?

He was discharged because we did not require his services in the Army any longer.

You did not require the services of a man who has given such long service and whose character was so good?
