Vol. 54 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Scoil Columbcille, Dublin.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the total number of teachers in Scoil Columbcille, Marlborough St., Dublin; the number of boys in each grade in the school; and how the grades are divided for instruction between individual teachers.

There are at present, and have been since October, 1928, four teachers on the staff of this school. This staff has been hitherto quite sufficient.

There has been an abnormal influx of children since the 30th June last. The number on the rolls has increased since that date from 159 to 248. The present organisation is as follows:—

The question of the appointment of an additional assistant is being investigated.

Will the Minister, when investigating the extraordinary situation that exists as regards the third and fourth and the higher standards, take into consideration that it might be possible to appoint two teachers? Does he not consider that there is evidence that an additional teacher is required for, say, the fourth standard alone; and that it is unreasonable in a school of this kind—the only school in the City of Dublin where primary education is given through the medium of Irish to boys—that the fifth, sixth and seventh standards will have to be looked after by one man?

I have nothing to add to my former answer.
