Vol. 54 No. 14

In Committee on Finance. - Vote No. 27—Haulbowline Dockyard.

I move:—

Go ndeontar suim Bhreise ná raghaidh thar £10 chun íoctha an mhuirir a thiocfaidh chun bheith iníoctha i rith na bliana dar críoch an 31adh Márta, 1935, chun Costaisí i dtaobh Longlann Inis Sionnach.

That a Supplementary sum not exceeding £10 be granted to defray the charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending 31st March, 1935, for expenses in connection with Haulbowline Dockyard.

This is an Estimate for renewing a pier in Cobh. There is a wooden pier there which has got into bad repair. It has been condemned and has to be replaced. At the moment it is used by the maintenance staff of the Board of Works, by the industrial tenants of Haulbowline Island, the ferry service of Haulbowline Island and the British services in the harbour. The pier has got into a thoroughly bad condition. It has been condemned and it has to be renewed in ferro-concrete at a loss of about £3,000. I am anxious to get the work done during the good weather.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary of opinion that the requirements of the industrial tenants and of the ferries might not be adequately served by a more modest form of structure than a ferro-concrete pier?

No. We are of opinion that there is not at present in Cobh facilities for the various services to which I have alluded. The facilities are required not merely for the Haulbowline tenants but for the British services as well. If we put one of these new services on the existing pier, there will be over-congestion.

Are we to take it that the ferro-concrete pier which the Parliamentary Secretary proposes to erect is largely for the convenience of the British fleet?

Amongst the users of it will be not so much the British fleet as the British military in the forts.

Question put and agreed to.
