Vol. 55 No. 1

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Arrests of Farmers.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the number of the members of the new Land League or other farmers arrested in Cork during the week ended 23rd February; and the reason for their arrest; and the number of those who have since been released; the number, and the names and addresses of those who are still detained in custody; and if he will state whether any charge has been made against those still in custody; and, if so, what the charge is; and if he will also state the number of those in custody who are more than sixty years of age.

Dr. Ryan

Eighteen persons were arrested in Cork during the week ended 23rd February. Of these, four have since been released and none of those who have been detained is more than sixty years of age. The persons in custody will be brought before the Constitution (Special Powers) Tribunal on the 5th of March on charges of which they have been notified in writing, and I do not think that it would be proper for me to make any further statement in view of the pending proceedings.

Will the Minister say if any charges were made against those who were released before they were released?

Dr. Ryan

Not that I am aware of.

I am aware that there were.

Will the Minister say how many of the murderers of Mr. More O'Ferrall are among the men arrested in Cork?

Dr. Ryan

There might be some— I do not know.

Or of Noel Lemass?
