Vol. 55 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage of River Suir.

asked the Minister for Finance if he has received a report from the engineers of his Department who inspected the River Suir, particularly at the points between Templemore, Thurles and Clonmel, and if so, if he will state the nature of the report and the estimated cost of the Suir drainage scheme as it affects County Tipperary; if he is aware that large tracts of land have been flooded by this river, and if in view of this and of the fact that it is the principal river in Tipperary he will make the drainage of it a State charge.

The result of the consideration of their inspector's reports on the River Suir from Carrick-on-Suir upstream to Loughmore was communicated by the Commissioners of Public Works to the county councils of Tipperary on 27th August, 1931.

I am sending the Deputy a copy of the letter for his information, from which he will observe that until the county councils concerned move in the matter no further action will be taken.

Under existing legislation there is no power to give effect to the suggestion that the drainage of this river should be carried out as a State charge.
