Vol. 55 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment of Juveniles.

Mr. P. Hogan

(Clare) asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he can state the number of persons between the ages of 14 and 18 years employed in (a) industrial; (b) commercial and (c) other employments and the number of such persons over 16 years of age who are compulsorily insured under the Unemployment Insurance Acts.

The most recent particulars available for reply to the first part of the Deputy's question are those of the Census of Population, April, 1926, when the number of persons aged 14 years, but under 18, at work was 92,644 of whom 10,959 were in (a) industrial employments, 8,927 in (b) commercial employments and 72,758 in (c) other employments.

The number of persons aged 16 years but under 18 insured under the Unemployment Insurance Acts in October, 1934, was 27,210, of whom 15,223 were employed in (a) industrial employments, 8,270 in (b) commercial employments and 3,717 in (c) other employments.
