Vol. 56 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Peat Development Schemes.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the total sum expended out of State funds on peat development schemes in each of the two financial years 1933-34 and 1934-35.

The net expenditure from the Vote for my Department in connection with peat fuel development in the years referred to amounted to £8,005 5s. 10d. and £24,019 9s. 0d., respectively. The first expenditure covered travelling and incidental expenses, sacks, and general publicity, and in 1934-1935 the expenses of the Turf Development Board, and it makes allowance for receipts in respect of sack sales and hireage. In addition to this expenditure minor relief works in the nature of bog drainage, bog roads, etc., paid for from the Vote for relief of unemployment were used to assist in peat development operations.
